boo! *:P*finali watched "I Am Sam"... umm... man, i'm abit embarrassd2 sae diz but i cried!!! few tymz summore... *paiseh* umm... dunno y i'm suddenli gettin so emo abt stuff... *paiseh* guess the onli comfort i haf after knowin i cried iz that i'm assured i haf a heart... *bleahz!* *:P*
oh, well... aniweiz, diz ish gonna b a rather long entry cuz i've gotta do a summary & reflectionz on de movie i've watched, yeah...

here goes:
Basically this heartwarming movie tells of how a family of two stick together. Right from the beginning, one can already sense the binding love within this father-daughter relationship.

The story starts off with the birth of a girl by the name of Lucy Diamond Dawson to a homeless woman, Rebecca, and a man with the intellectual capacity around that of a 7 year old. Apparently, Rebecca was not one to commit and thus left the helpless man to raise the child on his own.

This mildly autistic father is Sam Dawson – the main character of the movie. Who, with the help of his neighbor-cum-Lucy’s piano tutor and godmother, Annie Cassell, is able to simultaneously manage working at Starbucks and bringing up his precious little daughter. Another contributing factor to his sanity is the financial and emotional support his four other buddies have provided.

The complications only arise when Lucy turns seven and begins going to school. Initially, she copes well with the workload until one day when she realizes that her intellectual capabilities have surpassed that of her father. Owing to the circumstances that have taught her how to be sensitive, she starts to pretend that she is unable to read the difficult words in her English texts. The behavior she exhibited in school was a cause of concern to her teachers, leading to observation and eventually the diagnosis that she was “literally afraid to learn”.

Due to his disabilities, a worker at the Department of Child and Family Services (DCFS) decides that Sam is unable to provide the best for Lucy and as a result, takes her away from him, placing her under foster-care, only allowing him two monitored visits a week.

Meanwhile, Sam manages to get a lawyer to fight for him, proving he is perfectly capable of supporting and nurturing Lucy despite his inadequacies. However, many obstacles come his way. For example, the mental pressure the plaintiff’s attorney exerts on the fragile mind of Sam, the many compound questions that bombarded him to create confusion, the increasing complexity when the foster parents decide to press for adoption…

Unable to cope anymore, Sam momentarily crumbles under the weight of all these issues and eventually, probationary custody of Lucy was granted to the foster parents. Nevertheless, with the hearing regarding Lucy’s adoption just a week away, Sam began to pick himself up. He found a new job, moved to an apartment just blocks away from his beloved daughter and started visiting her – something that he had yet to do ever since she moved in with her foster parents, owing to the fear of rejection he harbored.

Finally, things started to take a turn for the better as Lucy’s foster mother, Randy, realizes that it would be impossible to permanently separate Sam and Lucy. The conclusion of this beautiful story is not explicitly expressed. However, in the course of the movie, the series of events do hint that the family would be reunited.
